Los mártires de Chateaubriand en la pintura decimonónica española

Muchas y variadas fueron las inspiraciones de que se sirvieron tanto la pintura de historia como su hermana menor la literaria a lo largo de su desarrollo en el siglo XIX. Sin embargo, no deja de ser sorprendente de donde surgieron algunas de ellas, sobre todo de las literarias, que tuvieron su mayor desenvolvimiento en la segunda mitad de esa centuria y principios de la vigésima. Ejemplo de ello son los dos cuadros que aquí traemos inspirados en la novela de Los Mártires del célebre escritor romántico francés François-René de Chateaubriand (Saint Malo, 1768-París, 1848); prueba no sólo de la gran relación que hubo entre la literatura —el vehículo por el que más pronto y mejor se expresó el espíritu romántico— y la pintura, la más literaria de las artes plásticas, sino quizá también de la celebridad de la que gozó esta novela entre la burguesía de la España del ochocientos…
