This article deals with an unpublished manuscript –a partial translation to Spanish of the plates from Robert Adam’s book on the Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalato (1764)– carried out at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in Madrid. The author compares this 18th century study with the villa-palace in modern publications, resulting from archaeological excavations, and finds that they do not differ essentially from the analyses made by the Scottish architect. Adam’s work was an excellent example of architectural composition and methodical arrangement of diverse typologies, in direct contrast with the teaching practices at the institution, during a period when the academicians were attempting to modernize them.
