This study deals with the complex question of iconographic sources, with particular focus on Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s Mary urging St. Teresa to name St. Joseph Protector of the Order in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, Budapest. The author reveals not only the demands of the patron and the freedom with which the artist carried them out in this painting, but also identifies the texts and notable graphic sources utilized. These prints were an important vehicle for the diffusion of iconography in Carmelite circles.
