Abstract

This article, commissioned by the editorial team of this special issue, addresses the following question: What do you think is the present and future of formalism and attributionism? The author, a renowned researcher with extensive experience in the study of Spanish Golden Age painting, reflects on the current and future state of the discipline in general as well as on the risks and advantages of these age-old methodologies, advocating for their use as tools for a comprehensive analysis of artworks. In particular, the article highlights the crucial role of these approaches in museums and in contexts of conservation, emphasizing the need for specialists to share and teach their findings through the new connoisseurship emerging from technical studies. The article calls for an interdisciplinary and collaborative effort among curators, historians, and conservators, with universities also playing an active role.
