José María Muguruza in Karachi. Inventing a New, Modern, National, Islamic Identity

José María Muguruza is a relevant, although little known, character within the Spanish architectural panorama of the last century. From various official roles, he was crucial in the definition of post war architecture in Spain. His position brought him the official commission for the design of a masterplan for Karachi, at that moment the capital of Pakistan, which would try to define, through architecture, a new identity for the young nation. This article is based on the unpublished documentation of this project to analyse José María Muguruza’s career and his contribution to defining Pakistani national architecture.
