This article deals with the funeral spaces of the Castilian kings during the 13th century, and the iconography of their tombs as the reflection of a political ideational system tending toward the sanctification of the monarchy. This elevation of royalty provoked an open conflict with certain members of the nobility and the royal family, as well as a political and artistic response.
