Un nuevo retrato ecuestre de Carlos II, por Herrera Barnuevo

En 1667 moría Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo, yerno de Velazquez, sucediéndole en el puesto de Pintor de Cámara, Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo que lo ocupará hasta su muerte en 1671. Al acceder a este importante cargo, cuyo cometido fundamental era suministrar la imagen oficial del Monarca reinante. Herrera Barnuevo era ya un artista muy conocido en la Corte, pues desempeñaba el cargo de Maestro Mayor de las Obras Reales desde 1662. Será a partir de esa fecha cuando comience a desarrollarse su labor de retratista regio, creando ejemplos interesantísimos que suponen el origen de un nuevo modelo de retrato oficial que responde a una intención de exaltación del joven rey, muy unida a la propaganda política. El cuadro que ahora damos a conocer es un retrato ecuestre de Carlos II niño, a los 8 ó 9 años de edad, cabalgando briosamente sobre un imponente corcel en posición de corbeta…
