The present study attempts to analyze several prints by Albrecht Dürer, as well as his painting Christ among the Doctors, in relation to the well-known Hieroglyphica of Horapollo, which we published in Spanish in 1991 (Akal). Erwin Panofsky analyzed the works of the German artist, but he apparently did not take into consideration certain iconographic details. Durer, following the advice of his protector Pirckheimer, elaborated the drawings for Horapollo’s Hieroglyphica, published by Professor George Boas. This visual and semantic vocabulary, of great importance in the History of Art from the Renaissance onward, and specifically in Durer’s graphic art, is evident in the carvings for the Triumphal Arch of Maximilian (1515), studied by Panofsky.

New documentation from the Archive of the Marqueses of Santa Cruz permits the reconstruction of the history of the first residences of the Bazán family in Granada, from the fifteenth through the nineteenth centuries, when they were demolished. Now it is possible to rectify and clarify confused and sometimes erroneous information gathered by previous scholars. This house is important because it is one of the first in Spain to receive Genoese artists and artworks, paid by Álvaro de Bazán, father of the future marquis of Santa Cruz, who in turn would contract Genoese artists for the construction and decoration of his palace in El Viso (Ciudad Real).

This study offers a complete vision of the life and activities of one of the many Flemish artists active in Spain between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries: Francisco de Cleves. Detailed analysis of the historiographic references to him and thorough examination of the documentary sources permit an approximation to the personal and professional circumstances of an artist who served two of the most important ducal houses of his day: Infantado and Pastrana.

In the gardens of the seventeenth century palace, property of the kingdom of Spain, in which is the Spanish embassy in Lisbon, we can observe a group —although not an homogeneous one, for the different dates and geographical origins (Genoa and eventually Rome)— of Italian baroque sculpture. D. Luís Lobo da Silveira (1640-1706) and D. Rodrigo da Silveira Silva e Teles (1663-1735), second and third counts of Sarzedas, owners of the palace in the 17th century and first decades of 18th century, were almost certainly the commissioners of this works, that today still remain in the property: three fountains (in the upper garden), a statue of Hercules (that belonged to another ancient fountain) and four (allegorical or mythological) statues in the yard. These last four statues in particular, assume a special importance because they enrich the panorama of Italian sculpture imported to Portugal in the baroque period and they prove the existence of works by the Genoese sculptor Bernardo Schiaffino (1678-1725) in Portugal, fact that remained unknown until now.

Between 1654 and 1677 the furnishings of the main chapel of the Cathedral of Santiago were reformed following the new Baroque principles imported from Madrid and Italy. The resultant changes are those known today: canopy, camerina and pergola with Solomonic columns and the wooden revetments of the walls. The construction work was directed by the canon of the Cathedral, José de Vega y Verdugo, who had spent several years in Rome, and was carried out first by Francisco de Antas, master builder of the Cathedral, and later by the new master builder, Domingo de Andrade. The Roman sources for these structures —Bernini’s canopy in St. Peter’s Basilica and Constantine’s pergola of twisted columns— are here proposed or revised, with the addition of new graphic and literary data.

The contract dated 1511 signed by Fernando Llanos and Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina, Castillian painters known as “the Hernandos,” for the termination of an altarpiece in the chapel of the “Virgen de les Febres” is presented here. This chapel was founded in 1497 in the collegiate church of Jàtiva (Valencia) by Francisco de Borja, Bishop of Teano and Cardinal of Cosenza. Based on this document, a series of hypotheses are put forth concerning the trajectory and works of “the Hernandos” following their execution of the doors of the main altarpiece of the Cathedral of Valencia.

Matrimony
Adultery

Escultura románica
Matrimonio
Adulterio
This study is centered on the figure of the so-called “Adulterous Woman”, located in the south portal of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Although it seems evident that this work was installed in the tympanum in a scarcely orthodox manner —proof of which are the mutilations it suffered— and it is difficult to establish its relationship with the principal theme (the Temptations of Christ), it has integrated— itself into the sculptural group, as demonstrated by the art historians who have managed to carry out a coherent reading of this relief within the ensemble. The idea that the piece served as a “backdrop” for a portion of the marriage ceremonies carried out “ante ostium templi” is defended here.

This study contributes new facts concerning the taste of Felipe V and Isabel de Farnesio for sculpture and antiquities, as well as the provenance and identification of the works composing their collection. Moreover, the dates in which the description of the gallery of statues installed in the Royal Palace of San Ildefonso was
carried out have been determined, as have been those of the plates which make up the “Aiello Notebook” between 1750 and 1751. The motives for carrying out this project and the reasons Isabel de Farnesio finally decided not to publish it are also examined. Data relating to conservation work carried out on these sculptures, now preserved in the collections of Patrimonio Nacional and the Museo del Prado, are likewise included.

Documents are presented here attesting to the presence of the painter Francisco de Herrera el Viejo in Madrid between 1647 and 1648. Likewise, important new information concerning the altarpiece of San Basilio in Seville is brought to light: the measurements of the architectural structure, the delay of almost ten years in its installation and payment to the artist; and, above all, the three paintings now located – a Christ Child from the door of the ciborium, and the portraits of Saint Basil the Great and Saint Eumelia, parents of Saint Basil – still attached to a fragment of the original alterpiece.

Within the historicist elaborations characteristic of late 19th and early 20th– century Toledo, Carlos V and his imperial epoch were of great significance. It is here that the bust–length portrait in silver of the Emperor, attributed to Leone Leoni (today in the Museo de la Santa Cruz, Toledo), makes its appearance. This attribution was formed at the same time that its true creator, the Toledan silversmith Majadas, was being forgotten, in an operation that was not entirely innocent and whose culminating moment came with the publicity surrounding its exhibition at the New York World’s Fair of 1964–65. The technique utilized by this artisan, his knowledge and use of 16th and 17th–century iconography, and the way he employs a rich play of symbolic content in order to praise the Emperor, all confer special interest on this piece.

A attempt is made to deepen our understanding of the diverse pictorial influences that went into the formation of the style of Luis de Morales: emphasis is placed on the Flemish, Portuguese and Toledan schools. Unpublished panel paintings are presented and suggestions are offered for the source of the iconography of the Virgins of the Hat or gypsies.

The tiling with arabesque designs lining the walls of the Comares Bath in the Alhambra has long been the subject of an intense debate concerning their origin: Islamic or Christian. The author offers new data, mainly archival, leading to new reflections on their origin and history, as well as providing referential elements in the face of possible future restorations.

The College of Corpus Christi, constructed at the end of the 16th century, is the personal project of the Patriarch San Juan de Ribera, and its cloister is the most significant Renaissance structure in the city of Valencia. A group of columns acquired in Italy by the Duke of Pastrana played a fundamental role in the conception of this architectural structure. The unknown architect based his project on them as well as on the formal and dimensional concepts of Serlio and Vignola. The result is proof of the level of assimilation of
the principles of Renaissance architecture in 16th-century Valencia.

Iconographical study of the frescoes of the cupola of the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados of Valencia, a work by Antonio Palomino, painted between 1701 and 1704. It is an approach to the analysis of the scope of the Celestial Glory. Here the Virgin appears as Queen and intercessor before the Throne of Grace, where, according to the iconographical tradition, St John The Baptist is included, and the arma Christi carried by angels. Around this nucleus they are arranged the Fortunate, grouped by the criterion of the Litany of Loreto, in which Mary is invoked with the titles of Queen of the Angels, of the Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Virgins and All the Saints. This article keeps continuity with another one previous titled.

The Equestrian Portrait of Charles I of England, coming from the Spanish royal collections and in the Prado Museum since the 19th century, has always been considered to be a copy of Van Dyck. It is now possible to demonstrate the authenticity of this work, the dimensions, quality and technique of which are identical to the Van Dyck in the National Gallery. The author studies the Madrid autograph replica stylistically and through the use of documentary materials ranging in date from 1650 to 1727. In 1654, when it was in Summerset Palace, the Prado version was considered to be “the best by Van Dyck,” and through this study the work is returned to his hand.

During the first decades of the 15th century excellent alabaster sculptures were produced in highly active European workshops located in the frontier region between northern France and the southern Low Countries, in a geographical area comprised by the cities of Lille, Arras and Tournai, and in the lower and middle Rhine. They were small-scale pieces appropriate for distribution to a wide market thanks to continuous mercantile activities. In these workshops sculptures with very similar characteristics were carried out which have been attributed to the so-called “Master of Rimini.” One of the most frequent types was the “Virgin Seated with the Christ Child,” adapted to the International Gothic or “beautiful style” between 1400 and 1440. The Virgin of the Rock in the Sanctuary of Betancuria (Fuerteventura Island, Canaries), corresponds to the prolific workshops of the “Master of Rimini.”

Iconographical study of the frescoes of the cupola of the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados (Valencia), painted by Antonio Palomino between 1701 and 1704. The author analyses the historical and allegorical aspects of the ensemble. The historical aspect is represented by miracles of the Virgin depicted on cartouches simulating monochrome bas-reliefs. The allegorical aspect appears in personifications of certain invocations of the Litany of Loreto (Salus, Refugium, Solatium and Auxilium), two others refer to the Virgin of the Destitute (Diligentia and Pietas), and as a corollary, the emblem of the crow feeding its young with its own blood, under the motto Desertorum Protectio. This article continues and completes “La Cúpula de la Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados de Valencia (I): El ámbito de la Gloria” (AEA, nº 317).

The author attempts to cover the documentary lacuna, which until now constituted the biography of the Italian scenographer Antonio María Antonozi, a forgotten figure in Spanish historiography, in spite of having played an important role directing comedies in the Real Sitio del Buen Retiro (Madrid) during the final years of the reign of Felipe IV. Likewise, an attempt is made to clarify certain basic questions heretofore incorrectly proposed, but explained in this article, concerning the participation of Court painters in the elaboration of theatrical scenography.

This study deals with the reconstruction -both architectonic and pictorial- of the 17th-century Main House (Casa Profesa) and church of the Jesuits in Madrid, unfortunately destroyed during the 19th century due to the urban reforms carried out on the calle Mayor. Thanks to a series of paintings acquired by Carlos III following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain (1767), it is possible to have an idea of the important works that once adorned this temple. The author locates and studies these paintings, all of them of artistic interest, since they are by major 17th-century painters such as Luca Giordano, Murillo or Pedro Orrente, as well as 16th-century masters such as Andrea del Sarto or Gerolamo Muziano.

The Almaraz bridge (Cáceres) is one of the most interesting of the XVIth century in Spain. Nevertheless, its constructive history was scarcely known. Through several lawsuits located in the Archives of Simancas and the Chancillería of Valladolid, it has been possible to reconstruct its biography, from the end of the XVth century until the definitive campaign retaken in the fourth decade of the XVIth century, by initiative of the Concejo de la Mesta and under the direction of Juan de Álava and his technical assintant Martín de la Ordieta. At first, the bridge was thought to have three arches and its layout was not straight. In 1539, Diego de Vergara took control of the piecework and fundamental changes took place, mainly the reduction of the number of arches to two. However, in 1542 when the informations ended, they had not managed to finish the first of the two arches, fundamentally because of economic problems derived from the corruption that affected the management at all levels.

This article deals with the funeral spaces of the Castilian kings during the 13th century, and the iconography of their tombs as the reflection of a political ideational system tending toward the sanctification of the monarchy. This elevation of royalty provoked an open conflict with certain members of the nobility and the royal family, as well as a political and artistic response.

In 1636, coinciding with a decisive moment in the Thirty Year’s War, Juan de Caramuel y Lobkowitz published in Brussels the Declaración Mystica de las Armas de España, invictamente belicosas (Mystical Declaration of the Arms of Spain, invincibly warlike), dedicated to the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria. This publication was in fact a symbolic and mystical eulogium of the arms of the Hispanic Monarchy, through the explanation of each of the coats of arms pertaining to the kingdoms constituting the monarchy. These discourses provide emblematic content for the heraldry of kingdoms, and constitute the models for many subsequent series of festive hieroglyphs, which were to represent political territories or geographical allegories by means of symbolically explained coats of arms.

Traces of Van der Weyden in the paintings of Bernart de Aras, “artist resident in Huesca”

In 1461, the Aragonese painter Bernart de Aras was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the small church of Pompién (Huesca). This altarpiece, completed two years later, could still be seen in its original location in 1936. Today, only four panels from the retable are preserved in the storerooms of the Museu d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. The central panel consists of a Madonna Enthroned with Child. Both of these figures clearly reflect the artist’s familiarity with the Madonna Durán, one of Rogier van der Weyden’s (1399/ 1400-1464) most famous pictures, now hanging in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. Therefore, it can be claimed that Rogier’s work was already known in Spain during his lifetime.

The quantity and high quality of most Italian sculpture in Spain lead us to study and publish a number of these Works. Since then continued research has brought to light new documentation which rectifies, confirms or augments the conclusions originally offered.

In 1747 the Spanish Ambassador in Rome was charged with the realization of plans of the building in which the Spanish Embassy was located for the purpose of studying wheter it would be possible to house the pensioners sent to the city by the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in order to complete their artistic studies. Alfonso Clemente de Aróstegui commissioned the architect Ferdinando Fuga to carry out the work, and assisted by one of his students, José de Hermosilla, they drew six plans of the building. Recently, these designs have been located in the Archivo General de la Administración; they constitute a document of enormous interest for the study of the diplomatic headquarters and for the Italian sojourn of the Spanish pensioner.

This study proposes a combined solution to two problems: the attribution of an altar panel from the Museo Diocesano of Camerino and the hagiography of the mysterious “miracle of the knight covered with shells” in this painting. The documentary sources related to the art, cult and iconography of Saint James the Great in Rome, in particular the descriptive work of Miguel Erce Jiménez, allow us to connect this panel with the lost altarpiece in Santa Maria Araceli by Giovenale of Orvieto, thus becoming the first picture in his catalogue. At the same time, these sources lead us to the Portuguese origin of the iconography of this miracle.

A series of nineteenth-century Spanish landscape paintings by different artists that have come to light in recent years in private colections and on the national and international art markets are here brought together and studied. These works are by Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, Antonio de Brugada, Carlos de Haes, Antonio Muñoz Degraín and Marceliano Santa María –the last two artists bridging the 19th and 20th centuries, but whose pictorial conceptions remained in the nineteenth.
